Asus Q534 Review – Simply Laptop

asus q534 ux review

The announcement of the Asus Q534in 2016 came with a surprise twist from Asus: it would only be available in Best Buy stores and on the Best Buy website, BestBuy.com. The 15.6-inch powerful laptop would be in a stylish black brushed aluminum body with a Core i7 processor and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M Graphics card. This would make it able to easily handle any sort of tasks that you can throw at it. Plus, being a 2-in-1 laptop means you can use it as a tablet or a laptop. Everyone was excited and looking forward to it. So how did it turn out? Here is a detailed review of the Asus Q534.

Asus Q534 Overview

Before we dive deeper into the review, here is a general overview of the specs:

Operating System: Windows 10
CPU: Quad Core Intel i7 Processor
RAM: 16GB 2133MHz DDR4
Hard Drive: 2TB HDD, 512GB M.2 SATA SSD
Display: 3840×2160 15.6 inch touchscreen 4K Display
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M
VRAM: 2GB

Design

The Asus Q534 is a black brushed aluminum laptop with 2-in-1 capabilities. The smooth finish is beautiful, albeit a little prone to fingerprints. When you open it up, it reveals a similar brushed metal deck with an island keyboard at the center. It looks even more beautiful as a tablet, with the glossy 4K screen standing out and displaying amazing picture quality.

It is only 0.86inches high and weighs 5 pounds, which makes it a convenient machine to carry around with you as you go about your day.

Display

It comes with a 4K display, which is awesome. 4K means it has 4 times the usual number of pixels, so you can imagine the kind of clarity you will get with the Asus Q534. Your media files have never looked sharper than this. It makes for a super vibrant and super immersive movie or video gaming experience, while also making your text super clear as you type. Asus really made up for themselves!

Hardware

The hardware of the Asus Q534 has been designed to look and feel great. However, sometimes some of the features are prone to acting up. For instance, according to Asus, laptop mode has been optimized to suit the use of the keyboard and mouse, while tablet mode has been optimized for the touchscreen. This does not always work 100% of the time, and you may realize that your keyboard or trackpad still has some sensitivity when you are in tablet mode. Although this can be a nuisance, it can be overlooked.

1. Ports and Slots

It comes loaded with ports and slots: a USB 3.1 Type C port, three USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, and an SD Card slot. It also has the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi, with speeds of up to 867Mbps, a headphone jack and a security key slot.

2. Webcam

It has an HD webcam that goes a step further and uses the infrared light spectrum for Microsoft Hello facial recognition. Perfect for quick and secure logins.

3. Keyboard and Touchpad

It has a nice ergonomical island keyboard that makes typing easy and instinctive. It also has a conveniently located number pad which makes your life way easier if you use numbers often. The keys have a perfect travel distance of 1.5mm. The keyboard also has a three-level backlight that makes it look even more classy.

It features a highly sensitive, multi-touch 10 finger touchpad right below the keyboard. The touchpad works great, and you will be able to use all the various multi-finger gestures that Windows 10 supports. However, the trackpad is prone to acting up and freezing when the laptop is handling heavier processes or when switching back and forth from tablet to laptop sometimes for some reason, as can be seen in numerous reviews. You should invest in a mouse just in case.

Performance

The Asus Q534 delivers a solid performance, with the Intel Core i7 processor with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M. As a productivity machine, you will be able to perform any task you want on it. It can also handle some serious gaming, especially because it comes with CUDA support which allows heavy games to use GPU power to reduce rendering times and processing times. This makes for an even better gaming experience. However, it was not built specifically to be a gaming laptop, and the Nvidia GTX 950M might struggle with some more intense games. Plus, there are many better gaming machines available for the same price that can handle such games if you are looking for a gaming computer specifically.

Audio

The speakers are Bang and Olufsen ICEpower speakers, which gives a clear, super-rich sound even on default settings. You will be able to hear both treble and bass clearly, which is great. The speakers are also really powerful, and at full blast, they will fill whatever room you are in with the sound. The Asus AudioWizard program allows you to switch between 5 presets to customize your audio quality. The default setting, however, works just as fine. For a totally immersive experience, however, consider getting external speakers.

Battery Life

The Asus Q534-UX has a 52Wh, 4 cell battery that only lasts 4 hours per charge. This is disappointingly low. However, it is understandable since a lot of processing power does go into making that 4K screen as awesome as it does. It is a tradeoff you have to make.

Pros

1. It has some impressively fast boot times
2. A huge amount of storage and a super fast hard drive
3. The 4k display is super vibrant and super immersive

Cons

1. The aluminum body is a fingerprint magnet. If you hate fingerprints, the Asus Q534 will drive you nuts
2. It has a very short battery life.
3. The trackpad is prone to acting up and freezing when the laptop is handling heavier processes sometimes for some reason, as can be seen in numerous reviews. You should invest in a mouse just in case.

Final Word

The Asus Q534 is a versatile machine. Its 2-in-1 flexibility makes it look amazing, and the 4K display will make anyone fall in love with it. It has a solid performance, and it will not fail you no matter what task you throw at it. It might be a little slow in playing some of the more modern demanding games, but changing a few in-game settings should remedy all that. All in all, it is a wonderful laptop and definitely worth its price.
