How To Buy More Storage On Laptop

How To Buy More Storage On Laptop

When buying a new laptop, it's data storage is one of the most important factors to consider.

We all know, no matter how big your laptop's storage is, at one time it will reach its maximum capacity.

Having no space is not only inconvenient but also slows down Windows and the applications you are trying to run on your laptop.

What can you do when your drive gets full?

In this article, we are going to show you some alternatives to get more storage on your laptop.

Upgrade Your Hard Drive

Replacing your Laptops Hard Drive - Video by ITJungles

A Hard drive is a high-capacity data storage device where programs and data files are reachable anytime.

Although it depends on the brand and model, most of the times you can't extend your current hard drive, because laptops have room only for one.

With that said, you can change it to a new drive with more storage space on it (e.g. instead of 500 GB you can have 1 TB).

There are many types of hard drives (SATAI,SATAII,SATAIII), so make sure to choose one that is compatible with your laptop. SATA Connections are backward compatible, so If your laptop is compatible with SATA3 drives, you can add SATA 1 or 2 drives, but keep in mind that the data transfer speed is going to be lower.

Take a look at the best rated hard drives on Amazon:

Choose an external drive

using an external hard drive with your laptop

If replacing your current hard drive is not a feasible option, you can always get an external drive and store files on it.

It can be a pain in the ass to carry an additional drive with you everywhere, if you are traveling a lot, but it is still better than burning data on CD or DVD like in the old days.

With that said, this could be a better option for someone who is less tech savvy, as you don't have to take your laptop apart (sometimes breaking the guarantee) or pay a technician to do that.

An external hard drive is completely plug-and-play, so You can just simply connect it to your laptop, transfer some files and pack it away. These external hard drives vary from size to size

The advantage of this drive is that it can store a huge amount of data (even 12 TB or more), while being portable.

Some of the best rated external hard drives:

Replace Your current HDD (hard disk drive) with an SSD (solid state drive)

If you are thinking about getting more storage (and don't want to use an external hard drive) we recommend upgrading your storage space by getting an SSD.

The biggest benefit of getting an SSD that it has no moving parts, which mean if you accidentally drop your laptop, it won't get damaged.

Most importantly, this type of hard drive is much faster than conventional HDDs. According to PCMag, an SSD can be 5 to 20 times faster than a simple hard drive.

The disadvantage of this alternative is that you might have to throw out your present HDD or repurpose it and it's neither cheap, nor a simple task to swap out (you have to screw & install). But if You have a slow, low-capacity HDD, it's a double good option.

Despite those disadvantages, it makes laptops very fast. With a new SSD, your operating system can easily boot only in a few second, rather than 10-20 seconds.

Don't forget to check the Top Rated SSDs:

Keep in mind that when it comes to hard drives, external drives and SSDs, you should always consider buying a new part rather than a second-hand replacement which has already been used by someone, because its lifetime differs a lot.

So you should buy a new part because it will run for a longer amount of time.

Upload files to a Cloud storage

Both iOS and Windows users are given this alternative, the difference is in the platform of the services.

Almost every cloud storage provider offers free storage up to a certain limit, but if you feel like it, you can also upgrade to a paid plan and get extra storage for your files.

For Windows users, Google Drive, Microsoft One Drive or Google One are options that are worth trying out, if you are looking for more storage space.

For iOS the best option is iCloud.

A huge advantage of Cloud Storage is that you can access your files anywhere, anytime from any of your devices.

Keep in mind, that the usual maximum space Cloud Storage services can offer is 5 TBs, so if you have a lot of files that use up a lot of storage space, you might want to invest in some physical hard drives or your own server.

Get a Pendrive

Although a USB hard drive or pen drive might not solve your "lack of space" problems fully, they offer a good portable option if you need to store some files or want to transfer them fast.

A pen drive is a small storage device, both in appearance and its function.

Pendrives are very convenient if you want to copy data and bring it with yourself and also have an affordable price point.

Of course, if you are looking for huge storage space, the price will increase, but without a doubt, it's the fastest and simplest solution to your storage space need.

Use a disk cleanup program to get rid of unnecessary files

Skim through your present existing files, apps, data in your laptop and decide whether you need all the files oris there something useless which you may never even take a look at?

If the answer is yes, then your problem is semi-solved.

Start to sort out and delete the files that you don't need or use a disk cleanup program, which does the work for you.

Disk cleanup programs search for and delete the unnecessarily stored files from your laptop to get space for new files.

Before they make the disk cleanup done, You will need to give permission. It is an easy way to expand storage space.

If you wonder whether it's safe to let the disk cleanup delete files, it is safe if Your laptop is running well. But if not, then make sure it doesn't delete files which are needed to run properly.
